Ukrainian Egg Art

Mrs. Cummins' Art II classes have been given the opportunity to make Ukrainian Eggs. These eggs are decorated using the "batik" method. The process is long but rewarding.

“We start with raw eggs and then the design is put on with a kistka.”, said sophomore Mark Batt. A kistka is a pen which writes with melted bees wax. After the wax is applied to the egg the egg is put in the lightest dye bath. More wax is applied to the egg to cover and protect some of the dye.

This process is repeated until all the dye colors the student selected are used.
Senior Katie Dey said “The best part is taking off the wax and seeing all the colors under it.” Mason Foxvog, a senior said it was interesting that this Ukrainian egg art had been done for over 2000 years. Jake Wiemer said it is fun and was glad he had not broken an egg yet.
