Superintendent's "Welcome Back"

by Mr. DeWaard

August 09, 2010

The summer heat is here, but fall is just around the corner as the 2010-11 school year is rapidly approaching. School begins on Wednesday, August 18th with a full day for the students. Welcome back to all returning students and a special welcome for all new students. I am looking forward to another great school year.
We are excited to have the following new staff members becoming a part of the Centennial family.
Craig Barjenbruch will be one of the Business Teachers and the FBLA Advisor. Mr. Barjenbruch is a graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and will be an assistant football coach and also a junior high boys basketball coach.
Dana Chrisman will be the new First Grade teacher this fall as Nancy Murphy moves to Second Grade. Mrs. Chrisman recently taught at St. Paul Lutheran in Utica.
Evan Klanecky will teach Jr. & Sr. High PE. A native of Ord, Mr. Klanecky graduated from Hastings College with a Bachelors and Masters Degree. He will also be the head football coach and an assistant junior high track coach.
Leah McClure will begin her teaching career at Centennial this fall as one of the Business Teachers. Ms. McClure is a native of Blue Springs and is a recent graduate of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She will be the head volleyball coach and an assistant track coach.
Jenna Murphy joins the Centennial family this year as the new Spanish Teacher. Mrs. Murphy was recently employed at Navasota High School in Texas and is a native of Fairbury. She will be an assistant softball coach and an assistant junior high track coach.
Linda Rafert takes over as the Title I Teacher. Mrs. Rafert taught at York prior to joining the Centennial family. She and her family reside near Gresham.
Ashlee Rickert joins the staff as a High School English Teacher. Mrs. Rickert was teaching at Crete. She will also be the yearbook sponsor.
Darlene Rockenbach will be the Pre-School Teacher. Mrs. Rockenbach and her family live in Seward. Previously, she was a teacher at St. John Child Development Center in Seward.
Angela Charron will be a paraprofessional in the Pre-School classroom. Mrs Charron and her family live in Waco.
Jessica Breitkreutz will be the new secretary in the high school office taking over for Linda Stuhr. Mrs. Breitkreutz and her family live in Beaver Crossing.
Please take an opportunity to welcome all of the new staff members to the Centennial family. They will all be great additions to the staff and we are looking forward to having them in the communities.
I am excited about the new school year and look forward to working with the students and staff this year. Thank you for your support of Centennial Schools.

Summer Projects
We are working on completing some summer projects before school begins. The elementary playground has a new layer of asphalt to even out the surface. The track will have a new surface before school begins, although we are waiting for them to complete this project. There is new carpet in some of the classrooms and new lockers are being installed in the boy’s locker room. A new surveillance camera system has been installed to better cover the building and entrances.
As always the custodians have been hard at work all summer cleaning and getting the building ready for another school year. I often hear from others how clean our building is and how nice it looks for as old as it is. The custodians have done an excellent job of cleaning and maintaining the building and grounds. If you see any of the custodians, please give them a pat on the back for the job they do!

Pick Up & Drop Off of Students
The buses will drop off and pick up the students on the east side of the school. If you are dropping off your child before school or picking them up after school, please use the south drive and drop off/pick them up in the south lot. This reduces congestion and is much safer than walking between vehicles.

SEASON PASSES
Centennial residents will be able to purchase athletic passes.  The price is $30.00 per person; the total not to exceed $75.00 per family. Persons who purchase these are entitled to attend all 7-12 home athletic events exclusive of tournaments for the 2010-2011 school year. These passes will go on sale at the secondary principal’s office on August 17.
