HOOPS FOR HEART WAS A SUCCESS!

7th and 8th graders "RAISING MONEY WITH HEART"

by Mrs. Heser

April 16, 2010

This year the seventh and eighth graders were asked again to raise funds for the American Heart Association through their Hoops for Heart activity and did an outstanding job!  This year the Centennial Junior High raised $1593.50 for the AHA and the top fund raisers were Megan Dinkelman and Eric Tonniges who both received and additional $25.00 Wal-Mart gift card besides the Hoops prizes for their efforts.  The 7th and 8th grade boys and girls that raised funds for Hoops for Heart were able to compete in a basketball competitions during their PE class and were also provided free SUBWAY sandwiches, chips, cookies and bottled water for their individual efforts.  Prizes ranged from water bottles to basketballs, t-shirts and a variety of unique toys provided by American Heart Association. We also received another HOOPS OF HEART banner that all the kids got to sign and is displayed in the school.

Why Hoops For Heart Is So Important

Heart disease is our nation's No. 1 killer; stroke is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability. Every year, almost 870,000 Americans die from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That's about 36 percent of all deaths.

These diseases may remain critical problems in the future because of poor lifestyle habits among American adults and children. For example, only one of 10 Americans participates in 30 minutes or more of vigorous activity every day. In addition...

  • Over 15 percent of children and adolescents are overweight.
  • 4 million children have above-normal blood pressure.
  • 27 million children have high blood cholesterol.

Healthy lifestyles can help prevent heart disease and stroke. Eating healthy, nutritious foods, being physically active, staying tobacco-free, and maintaining a healthy blood pressure and weight are all part of a healthy lifestyle.  Hoops For Heart helps get this message across to our students.

We would like to thank all the members of our district and families for supporting this tremendous effort every year as well as our students themselves.  A special "thank you" SEWARD SUBWAY for providing the meal for all our students that raised funds for this cause.  Subway is a national sponsor and the Seward store was more than supportive in our efforts and requests for sandwiches and all the extras.  Please let them know how much they are appreciated when you visit their store in Seward!
