H1N1 - Swine Flu Information

September 04, 2009

Dear Parents of Centennial School Students:

H1N1 influenza is a concern for schools across Nebraska.  All schools are taking steps to prevent and slow the spread of the disease.  H1N1 Influenza is a new influenza that is spreading worldwide.  Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, and possibly diarrhea and vomiting.

At this time the H1N1 influenza vaccine is not available.  It is anticipated that the vaccine will be available in October for certain priority groups.  The seasonal influenza vaccine is available and recommended by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for all children.

You can help protect your child by taking steps to prevent the spread of influenza.  This includes:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.  If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective
  • Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
  • Keep your child from having close contact with sick people, including anyone in the household who is sick.
  • Get a seasonal flu vaccine for yourself and your child.
  • When the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, get your child vaccinated if they are included in the priority groups.
  • Keep your child home when sick.  If your child is experiencing flu-like illness, they should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines.
  • Get plenty of rest, eat well and drink plenty of fluids
  • If your child has chronic health conditions and becomes ill with flu-like symptoms or if symptoms are severe contact your child’s health care provider.
  • Stay informed about seasonal and H1N1 influenza.

If you have further questions contact the school nurse, Sue Arnold, or your child’s health care provider.

Sincerely,

Trisha Sams M.D.
