Personification involves giving human qualities or attributes to something that is not human. Ms. Hottovy’s freshmen English students were challenged to write a poem using personification.
“My Playstation 3”
By Brad Nagel
I patiently wait
For more attention
Sitting quietly
On my shelf
I watch him walk into
The room
My wires reach
Out and
Touch him
He has to make
Time for me
But
He has chores
To do
Sweet
He gives in
My controller
Leaps
Into his hands
GREAT
THAT WORKS
I
WIN
AGAIN!

A haiku is a three-line poem with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line, and five syllables in the third. Traditional haiku focus on nature and include some sort of imagery (wording that appeals to the five senses). After reading several examples of haiku, the freshmen in Ms. Hottovy’s English classes were challenged to write their own. Enjoy!
Sitting and waiting
For something big hopefully
Finally Bang Bang
-------------------------
“Ants”
Scramble, stay alive
Danger at every footstep
No time now to chat
~ Madison and Misty Mogee
Wings are flickering
Colors dancing in the sun
As it shines brightly
~ Misty Mogee
“Just Dance”
Listen to that beat
Swing and twirl your legs around
Baby, let it go
~ Misty Mogee
-------------------------
A beautiful day
Yet everyone is crying
Why are they crying?
~
Bright colors everywhere
Yet the color of choice – black
Like somber penguins

There’s a soothing breeze
Sobs & songbirds intertwine
At a funeral

-------------------------
I sit there waiting
July, come around quickly
How I want fun now
~
How I love summer
The warmth and storms you bring me
Waiting for you to come
Autumn leaves floating
I sit there watching leaves fall
Colors and joy you bring.
-----------------------------------------
The crack of the bat
The ball goes flying toward the fence
It goes over the fence
~
I step on first base
And step on second and third
I keep sprinting fast
~
I am half way there
The dirt flies into my face
I slide at home. SAFE!
-----------------------------------
Being free from school
Not having to do homework
How I love summer!
~
The hot, burning sun
Ouch! My sunburn really hurts
How I love summer!
~
Dark, cool summer nights
Watching the glowing fireworks
How I love summer
------------------------------------
Pitcher flings the ball
I mightily swing the bat
Whif! That is strike one
~
The catcher signals
The pitcher winds up let’s go
Whomp! Foul ball strike two
~
I sweat pressure builds
The summer heat gets to me
This is it, game time

Pitcher takes the sign
This is a ball I know it
Smack! Strike three I’m out

I dribble the ball
And without warning she comes
To snatch it away

Birds flying by day
Sleep among the trees at night
Nature’s fantastic

Cumulonimbus
Gracefully floats through the sky
Leaving rain puddles.
~
The sweet smell of rain
Leaving dew among the grass
Quenching thirsty plants
~
The cloud floats away
Leaving the sky peacefully
Cumulonimbus
~ Allison Yamber

Favorite season
Enjoying hot summer nights
Splashing in the pool

The dark foreign clouds
Coming like a raging bull
Clap! Thunder clamors

Right above us now
Intimidating the sky
Lightning strikes the world

The apartments scream
The storm attacks them wildly
They don’t stand a chance

Winds roar all around
Leaves flutter off a tree
Dogs bark from afar

“The Kill”
I creep up on it
As I go in for the kill
The victim stays still
~
In the field I crawl
So still, so quiet, so strong
I stay confident
~
I stay still and wait
I stand and wait for the kill
Then boom and it’s dead
-----------------------------------
“The Beach”
Waves crashing on shore
Children building sand castles
Tanning in the sun

Walking toward the sea
Splashing, swimming everywhere
Burning sunshine on my face

Pebbles, sand, treasures
Buried deep into the earth
Hurry, be the first

White sparkling snow
Sledding is a lot of fun
Oh how cold it is

Sitting by a fireplace
Drinking yummy hot cocoa
With small marshmallows

Having snow ice cream
Wearing snow clothes and big scarves
Making snow angels
-------------------------------
Flowers come to life
Amidst early morning dew
They are strong and tall

The flowers can now survive
They can finally rest

| 05/19/2010 | Nicely done, Freshman English Class! I especially liked Mr. Fish's poem. It sounds like a very true statement with those hooligan-freshman classes. I wish there was more recent postings rather than one from February and then nothing until May. Makes me wonder what you were "studying" that whole time. |
