Centennial School District History

January 24, 2003

FORMED:

School districts of Beaver Crossing, Utica, and Waco merged in 1967 (Thayer merged with Waco earlier). The school district of Gresham and part of the Cordova district joined in 1986.

SIZE:

Approximately 312 square miles located primarily in eastern York and Seward counties. Some parcels of land from Butler and Polk counties are also in our district including and additional 3.5 square miles of affiliated property in Butler county.

LOCATION:

Pre-K-12 District at Utica. All students under one roof!

FACILITIES:

A 100,000 square foot school was built on a 40-acre site at Utica in 1977. A 3,840 square foot weight room/wrestling practice area was added in 1988. A 12,000 square foot elementary addition was added in 1992. A 7,650 square foot secondary addition (three classrooms and a girls locker room) was added in 1997. Two auxiliary buildings are located in Utica and a bus barn in Beaver Crossing.

SIZE:

Centennial is the 53rd largest of 263 (top 20%) K-12 Nebraska School Districts.

CURRICULUM:

K-6 A basic sequential curriculum is provided in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. Music, Art, Physical Education, Keyboarding, and a gifted program (PAT) are also offered. The above is supplemented with other worthwhile learning activities that include field trips, Artists-in-Residence programs, a career awareness program, special education and Title 1.

7-8   Course offerings include Science, Social Studies, Math, Health, Physical Education, Art, Reading, English, Introduction to Home Economics, Into to Industrial Tech., General Business, Vocal Music, Band, and a Gifted Program (PAT). Students participate in an area mathematics competition at York, plus a MATH COUNTS competition where the more successful students may advance to regional, state and national levels. A special education program is also provided.

9-12A comprehensive curriculum includes the following: Business, Driver Education (summer only), English, Fine/Performing Arts (art, band, vocal music), Computers, Mathematics, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Gifted Education, Special Education, and Vocational Education.

ORGANIZATIONS/ACTIVITIES (7-12):

Student organizations/activities include Quiz Bowl, Model Bridge Builders, C-Club, Concert Band, Stage Band, Pep Band, Dance Team, Drama, FCA, FFA, FCCLA, NHS, FBLA, Mat Girls, Student Council, Show Choir, Yearbook, and Yell Squad.

ATHLETICS (7-12):

We offer football, volleyball, cross-country for boys and girls, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, softball, and boys and girls track.

A full-time R.N. is employed to provide the many varied health services necessary for all students.

This staff works to keep our buildings clean and is good repair. Preventive safety measures are taken in the buildings and on the school grounds.

These people perform a variety of functions ranging from serving as receptionist, maintaining records, typing correspondence, selling lunch tickets, preparing the newsletter, reports, budgetary accounting, payroll, etc.

Twelve regular routes and four special education routes operate daily to transport an estimated 600 students.

SPECIAL NOTE: Not included in the above numbers are host of substitute teachers and substitutes for various support staff members. Further, we have some volunteers who help with various activities throughout the year.
